Dancing With The Stars – Season Five – Week One – The Results Show

Posted by ctanglefoot on September 27, 2007

Or the episode entitled: I could skinny dip in his eyes

Up next week for our remaining Celebs the Mambo and the Quickstep. But this week they still had to face the results of their Foxtrots and Cha Chas.  As in the past the judges picked their favorite routine of the week for a repeat performance, not surprising was their selection of the hot, spicy Hip Hop – Cha Cha of Cheetah Girl Sabrina Bryant and Mark Ballas. As sizzling and sexy the second time around, as it was Monday night.

The first week bottom three consisted of  Floyd Mayweather, JuniorMark Cuban, who garnered the least amount of votes from Tuesday’s night’s show. And ousted this week was Sports Illustrated Model Josie Maran, who received the lowest number of votes following Monday night’s competition.

In parting Maran said she had the dancing bug and would now go dance solo.  Ever the gentleman, Alec Mazo (her dancing pro) offered to dance with her, right before asking the public to send their votes to Cameron and Edyta (Alec’s new bride of four weeks.)  Ah, so sweet.

Season Five – Week Two begins Monday, October 1st at 8pm on ABC.

Dancing With The Stars – Season Five – Week 1 – Night Two – The MEN

Posted by ctanglefoot on September 26, 2007

The women opened the competition last night Foxtrotting and Cha Cha Cha-ing into rhythm footed Celebs.  Tuesday night found the other half of the dozen taking center stage with their professional counterparts.

Kicking off Testosterone Tuesday was…

All My Children’s Cameron Mathieson partnered up with Edyta Sliwiniska Foxtrotted to music that was too fast for the dance.  I wasn’t wowed, Mathieson’s shoulders kept dropping, they glided, they flowed. They received moderate comments from the judges and straight 7’s for a total of 21.

Side bar…Have you noticed they are putting far too many graduating bars in the AT&T commercials?  It use to be interesting to notice the bars, now it’s just too much.

Six time World Champion Boxer, Floyd Mayweather, Junior partnered with Karina Smirnoff for a Cha Cha.  The music started off really weird and I questioned whether I would like the dance, but it showed personality, ability, moveablity, fluidity, and rhythm. The judges were positive, supportive, looked to the future giving the pair received straight 6’s for 18 points.

Brazilian Indy & Formula One Champion hottie Helio Castroneves and Julieann Hough Foxtrotted with nice footwork, good timing, wonderful lines, and was playful.  Castroneves kept his shoulders up, good rhythm, was charming, and looks hot in a Tux. The judges were very happy giving the couple 8-9-8 for 25 points and the lead.

Male Model (because he’s not female) Albert Reed  and partner Anna Trabunskaya Cha Cha’d for their first dance. He can dance, and he can’t dance. Some moves were perfect for him others showed his stiffness, and non understanding of the choreography. The judges enjoyed the fun of the dance but wasn’t sure it was a Cha Cha, giving them straight 7’s an opening score of 21.

Entrepreneur and owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban was paired with Australian Kym Johnson.  The two delivered the Foxtrot to a sweet version of King of the Road, delightful, flirty, they had fun, even thought he didn’t dance that great, but he did dance with joy.  A little stiff, his shoulders drooped a few times, he sang to the music, but not bad. The judges liked the performance for the most part giving the pair giving the pairs straight 7’s for 21.

Mr. Las Vegas, Wayne Newton partnered with Cheryl Burke the twosome Cha Cha’s with energetic fun, he looked so happy. Stiff, but happy. From the judges they received 6-7-6 for 19 on the night.

Tomorrow night the results and someone goes home.  Next Monday night the teams take on the Quickstep and a dance to be named.

Dancing With The Stars – Season Five – Week One – The WOMEN!

Posted by ctanglefoot on September 25, 2007

What do you get when you mix a Cheeta Girl with Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, some Scary Spice and Marie Osmond, with a dose of 90210’s Kelly and a super model?  The opening night in the latest edition of Dancing With The Stars, and I have to say what a fabulous opening night it was.

In the past Dancing With The Stars was limited to a two hour show, being whittled down over the weeks of competition to an hour, and a results show.  This season begins with two nights of hour long performance competition, Monday the women, and Tuesday the men (this will be cutting into my NCIS….hmmmmm,) with a Wednesday night result show.

For those unfamiliar with the cast and concept – twelve “celebrities” are paired up with twelve ballroom dance professionals and scored by three judges. Professional dancer and choreographer Carrie Ann Inaba; Italian dancer and choreographer Bruno Tonioli; and head (professional) Judge and Latin dancer Len Goodman. Tom Bergeron host the show and second season winner Drew Lachey is stepping in for the first few weeks as colour commentator / understudy for the Samantha Harris who just gave birth yesterday (Sunday, September 23rd.)

So how did they stack up? Quite well, outshining opening and returning week episodes of seasons past by a long shot. The challenge: to Foxtrot or Cha Cha their way into the hearts of voting America.  Up first…

90210’s Jenny Garth and her partner Derek Hough (brother and partner of JulieAnn Hough) – their opening number the Cha Cha. My opening thoughts were that Garth had nice body attitude, she missed a few steps, but held up over all well.  Hough choreographed the piece lightly to show off Garth but not over challenge her.  The DRESS was exceptional.  The pair scored straight 7’s from the judges for a 21.

Super Model Josie Maran and her partner Alec Mazo drew the Foxtrot. In a moment of what had to have been desperate truth or dare Mazo described Maran as “deceptively unfit.” He was all elegance, she was awkward in movement, she didn’t (despite what the judges said) look comfortable, she was decisively out of her element, and looked scared.  The duo scored a 6 from Inaba, 5 from Goodman, and 5 Tonioli for a score of 16.

One of Disney’s Cheetah Girl, Sabrina Bryant paired up with Mark Ballas for the Cha Cha. Bryant shone as an early leader in the competition after a hot, sexy, performance that left me saying, “Wow! That wasn’t a week one performance.” But I knew incorporating Hip Hop into a Cha Cha was going to bring them some ire from at least Len Goodman, who commented that he’d have to mark down for the Hip Hop.  The marks 9 – 8 – 9 for a leading 26 for the night.

One of my favs Marie Osmond drew Jonathan Roberts and a Foxtrot for her first dance out. What she lacked in danceability, Osmond made up for in personality and showmanship. The choreography was kind and non challenging to her, she looked happy and had fun through the entire performance. While there was one or more clunky transitions in the dance, Osmond demonstrated finished hands, nice lines and wonderful personality.  They drew straight 7’s from the judged for a 21.

Scary Spice Mel B doesn’t look like she just had a baby.  Her and Partner Maksin Chmerkovskiy worked out an energetic Cha Cha, with very nice, tight footwork. But her hair was distracting to me, and I was left with very few impressions of the dance. They scored higher than I expected drawing straight 8’s for a 24.

Closing out the night was Jane Seymour whom I’ve adored since she starred opposite Christopher Reeves in Somewhere In Time heavy sigh.  Partnered with Tony Dovolani (of the bright white smile – whoa he could be an Osmond with those teeth) they presented a beautiful Foxtrot. Flirty, elegant, happy, wonderful, romantic, with beautiful lines, nice foot work, and lovely hands. It was light and beautiful. They pulled straight 8’s from the judges for a 24.

So there you have it night one of Dancing With The Stars. The early front runner is easily Sabrina Bryant, but don’t give up on the rest, all profess to not be quitters.  And the men debut their Foxtrots and Cha Chas Tuesday night. Lets see if they can put their feet where their mouths are.
