Save the Last Dance for Me

Posted by ctanglefoot on November 28, 2007

Helio Castroneves and his dancing partner Julieanne Hough claimed the 2007 Mirrorball trophy at the end of tonight’s Dancing With The Stars‘ season five finale.  The golden team were showered with golden confetti to match the moment that can at the end of a season filled with incredible dancing and un-precedent tens.

The evening began with the elimination of Marie Osmond and her partner Jonathan Roberts from the final competition. The perennial entertainer had been called the mix of Baby Jane and the Bride of Chucky for her final dance of the season, a rag doll freestyle, that was cute, adorable and fit Osmond’s personality to take her into third place.

The reminder of the evening was a revisit of performances past as dancers and celebrities reprised their favorite routines from weeks past.  The crowd favorite was, undeniably, Cheetah Girl Sabrina Bryan and her dancing partner (and boyfriend) Mark Ballas.

Spice Girl Mel B and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy performed a jazzed up Mambo with cutting percisiion. Mel and Maks are hot together and the choreography shows off Mel’s personality, ability, and character.  It was no surprise when the judges scored them straight tens for 30 points on the evening.

Indy Car Champ and Brazilian hottie, Helio Castroneves and his dancing partner Julieanne Hough reprised their Banana Zoot Suit Quickstep. The fabulous footwork, personality, and precision of this dance are breath taking, I could watch it again and again. The judges liked it too, scoring them straight tens for 30 points on the evening.

Who could be surprised? The competition this season and the ability were unsurpassed in Dancing With The Stars history. And at the end of the night when Helio and Julieanne were crowned champions of season five no one could argue, unless it was for dual championships it was that tight.

Coming up in January, Dance Wars: Bruno vs Carrieanne – I’ll be back January 7th to bring you my insights and thoughts. Until then…

Dancing With The Starts – The Final Threesome

Posted by ctanglefoot on November 27, 2007

Just one more night of dancing and the season is over. Usually the finale night is colourful, exciting, dynamic; tonight’s performances were not up to the usual norms for Freestyle night. Freestyle is a joyous release of the rules, and while tonight there were lifts, it left me wanting a lot more.Where last week’s performances delivered ten after ten, tonight’s performances were lucky to get nines. Okay there was one lone ten on the evening.

Mel B and Maksim began the night with a Cha Cha. I missed this performance. The judges scored them 28 points.

Their Freestyle was kind of herky jerkey in my books.  Interesting, but lackluster. The lifts were intriguing, but the footwork was boring. And Mel’s costume? Hideous. The judges scored them straight 9’s for 27 points and 55 on the evening.

Marie and Jonathan opened the night with a Samba. Why the Samba? Because the last Samba this duo did ended with Marie passed out on the floor. It’ was a nice dance, but not finale night great, in fact in relationship to finale night it was boring. Not great musicality. And one of the judges noted, and I totally would concur if asked, Marie is a great entertainer, but the dances showed her dance inabilities. What carries Marie, besides her strong fan base, is her ability to entertain. The judges scored them straight 8s for 24.

The Freestyle was a quirky Marie showcase. Cute, entertaining, fit her ability, but not a finale dance.  The judges scored them 8 – 7 – 7 for 22 points.   46 points on the night.

Helio and JulieAnn Jived to open the night. They chose the Jive because the judges had been disappointed by their Jive last week. I like their choice and their reasoning. JulieAnn’s choreography shown once again; the characters were adorable, the dance entertaining, great musicality, and nice footwork.  The judges were not as impressed and scored them (to the dismay of JulieAnn) 8 – 8 – 9 for 25 points.

Their Freestyle, rocked.  A very entertaining dance, offering interesting role reversal, great lifts, great musicality, good technique, although one or two lift entries were a bit questionable. The judges scored them 9 – 10 – 10 for 29 points. A total of 54 on the night.

The leader board at the end of the night ranked them as follows…

1)     Mel  B and Maksim – 55 points

2)     Helio and JulieAnn – 54 points

3)     Marie and Jonathan – 46 points

The winner will be crowned tomorrow night at the conclusion of a two hour finale show that will allow them one last dance. Tune in tomorrow night to find out who wins the Disco Ball Trophy for Season Five of Dancing With The Stars.

Three Dance Into Next Week’s Finals

Posted by ctanglefoot on November 21, 2007

They could have danced all night, but one vying couple said good bye at the end of tonight’s Dancing With The Stars. But not before Jenny and Derek gave a Cha Cha encore.  Not before Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas returned for a spectacular and stunning performance to Avril Lavigne’s Complicated followed by a standing ovation. And not before the Lord of the Dance, Michael Flately performed to a riotous applause. What a night.

And who could stand the thought of missing Kenny Mayne’s riviting and revealing report on DWTS addiction rehab for ex dancer celebs. Actually, I love Kenny Mayne’s Dance Center and his exposes, tonight’s featured former DWTS Celebs Layla Ali, Carson Tucker, and the husband/wife team of Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin.

Dancing from this week into next week’s finals are….

Marie and Jonathan

Mel B and Maksim

Helio and JulieAnn

Going home this week….    Jenny Garth and Derek Hough

 Until Monday night’s finals

Ciao

And then there were four

Posted by ctanglefoot on November 21, 2007

I doubly enjoyed tonight’s Encore Performance of Helio and JulieAnn’s Quickstep. Delightful. But after tonight there are only four couples left in the competition. And they are

Marie and Jonathan

Helio and JulieAnn

Mel B and Maksim

Jenny and Derek

Going, going, gone tonight were Cameron and Eydta.

Up next Monday night the dancers chose the Ballroom and Latin dances of their choice for the Semi Final Dance Down. Until then.

Dancing With The Stars – The Semi Finals aka Queen B meets the King of Drive

Posted by ctanglefoot on November 20, 2007

And what a night it was, in the history of the American version of Dancing with the Stars there has never been so many 10s awarded. Two Celebs tonight danced there way to perfect scores and I don’t mean 30.

The best of Ballroom; the best of the Latin dances, each team selected their favorite of each category tonight.

Marie and Jonathan split their choices. Marie opted for the Quickstep in the Ballroom round. Jonathan choreographed a fun, happy dance that offered great character, fancy footwork, and lots of personality.  The judges liked it scoring Marie and Jonathan 10 – 10 – 9 for 29 points.

Jonathan selected the Mambo and dished up a madcap and fun dance. There was lots of great content and action, a few slow moves, but over all a good dance.  There judges gave them the lowest score of the night, straight 9s for 27.  An over all of 56 points on the night and the bottom of the leader board.

and Maksim selected the Viennese Waltz in the Ballroom round. Absolutely divine, a beautiful dance, flowing, awesome, perfect.  The judges thought so too, giving them straight 10s for 30 points.

Here musicality absolutely sucked, not their fault – but MUSIC DIRECTOR WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? Satisfaction led to an unsatisfactory experience for me. But the judges liked it giving them straight 10s again, for a 60 on the night, the first of two perfect scores.

Jenny and Derek first Tangoed in the Ballroom round. The music again was absolutely aweful (I’m beginning to think I’m a Ballroom purist.) The choreography was slow (it was a Tango) the music was far too fast in comparison. I just didn’t like it. The judges scored them 9 – 10 – 9 for a 28.

Their Cha Cha in the Latin round was superb in comparison. Good dance, good performance, good musicality, great costume.  The judges scored them perfect 10s for 30 and a total on the night of 58.

And Helio and JulieAnn totally rocked.  In the Ballroom round they danced a Foxtrot. Now I’ll be up front, straight, I do not like the Foxtrot. Boring.  This dance was anything but boring. Fabulous dance, JulieAnn’s choreography was superb, the footwork fast and fabulous.  The judges liked it too, scoring them straight 10s for 30 points.

In the Latin round they Cha Cha’d their way to another perfect score, tying with Mel and Maksim for 60 points.

I am sticking to the belief that Jenny Garth will go home tomorrow, barring some disastrous voting by the fans. This thought is of course coming from the woman who doesn’t vote, because, “Hey, I’m a journalist.”

The love birds of the season, Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas will return tomorrow night with a special dance. And Kenny Mayne will offer up a Dance Center expose on life after  Ballroom, the dirty ugly truth of a celebrity’s life, after the spotlight turns off.

The debut of Dance Wars: Bruno vs CarrieAnn was announced to night as January 9th, I will defiantly be covering the competition…er if Jenny T let’s me. Hopefully she be embroiled in some dance steps of her own.

Until tomorrow night,
Tanglefoot.

Dancing With THe Stars – Week Eight – Zoot Suit Banana

Posted by ctanglefoot on November 13, 2007

A good week of dancing for the stars, but not all are up to where they should be in the eight week. And a lot of that is to be laid on the shoulders of the pros, because the create the dance.

First up for the night,

Jenny and Derek dancing the Jive.  A good dance, wonderful choreography, but Jenny legs were all flighty. Jive kicks should be sharp digs, Jenny’s feet flailed in the air, her kicks were not controlled nor finished. Plus she kind of ran out of umph! Towards the end of the dance.  The judges score them straight 8’s for 24 points.

In dance two the duo Fox-trotted with some very nice foot works. The piece was light with loads of personality and good music.  The Judges scored them 9 – 9  – 8 for 26, a grand total of 50 on the night.

Cameron and Eydta first danced a Viennese Waltz. And it was a waltz that little girls and romantics dream about. Mathieson has very nice lines, holds, and pauses in the dance. A lovely lilting quality. The judges liked it too, giving them straight 9’s for 27 points.

Their Cha Cha was good. Very nice fast foot work, strange but interesting selection of music (I always have to wonder at the musical director of the show) Brown Sugar for a Cha Cha? It worked.  The judges gave them straight 8’s for 24, a total of 51 on the night.

Marie and Jonathan Rumba’d to start their night off. A slow, sultry, sexy dance, a bit off time at the end, and I thought there were places were there could have been more choreography. The judges thought so too and scored them straight 8’s for 24 points.

The duo danced a country Jive that was adorable. Good footwork, but one jump was a bit ackward for me. It has great personality, delightful choreography.  The judges scored them 8 – 9 – 8 for 25, a total of 49 and the total lowest score on the night.

Helio and JulieAnn rocked the house. Up first a Paso Dobles. I love this dance, it’s of fiery passion and aggression. The cape work was splendid, the attitude excellent, good character, wonderful footwork and lines. The judges awarded them straight 9’s for 27 points.

Their second dance on the night was a fabulous Quickstep. Great dance: total musicality, fabulous energy, character, footwork, and lines.  JulieAnn’s choreography was at its best. Helio shone. The judges loved it too, giving them the only perfect score on the night, for a total 57 points on the evening.

Mel B and Maksim opened their night with a Tango. Right off I will say the music was hideous, but Mel and Maksim have tight foot work, good physical attitude. But Gads I hated the music.  The judges gave them straight 9’s for 26 points.

The Mambo is the perfect dance for Mel B, and Maksim’s choreography was inspired.  The dance was cute, energetic, kind of slowed at one point, but nice musicality,  and wonderful role reversal in the dance more than once for a light feel.  The judges liked it too, scoring them 9 – 10 – 10 for 29 pints a total of 56 on the night.

I’m crossing my fingers and hoping that Helio and JulieAnn’s Quickstep is Tuesday’s encore performance, it was that wonderful. And featured Helio’s Banana Zoot Suit. Classic and handsome.

Going home? I think it’s between

Jenny and Derek

Marie and Jonathan

Until tomorrow night, Sith,

And Next on Dance Center – Double the blue eye shadow?

Posted by ctanglefoot on November 7, 2007

Loss hit Dancing With The Stars again this season. Marie Osmond was not present during tonight’s results show after the passing of her father, George Osmond. By coincident Osmond had just dedicated a delightful Quickstep to her parents.  Despite being present, Marie and Jonathan remain alive in the competition to dance again next week.

Encore performance of the week, no surprise, and twice as delightful. Mel B and Maksim’s smoldering hot, Paso Dobles.

Kenny Mane and Jerry Rice returned to Dance Center with a cutting, bias look at this years competition and not to little a bit of bellyaching, and a bit of ribbing of Len Goodman (I enjoy Dance Center) but I have to say, “Kenny put down the applicator, and step away from the blue shadow. Plus a little bit more mascara never hurt anyone.”

Bottom three

Helio and JulieAnn

Jane and Tony

Jenny and Derek

Going home – Jane Seymour and Tony Dovalani

Only five couples remaining and three weeks of competition left.

Ballroom and Latin – Dancing With The Stars, Week 7

Posted by ctanglefoot on November 6, 2007

On the week heels of last week’s shocking eviction of Cheetah Girl Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas (Who, by the way, finally have had their first date and are officially an item) our celebs and dancers had their first night of competition with two dances.  Each team had to perform a dance from both the ballroom and Latin disciplines. And the results were delightful.

Helio and JulieAnn opened the night with a Tango. (I always thought this was a Latin dance, silly me.)  Great footwork, fit the music, young, and sexy. What an awesome dress JulieAnn.  The judges scored them 9 – 8 – 8 for 25 points.

In the Latin round they danced a Samba. Now hint, the Samba is JulieAnn’s favorite dance, and her choreography showed it.  The dance definitely fit Helio. It was fluid, sexy, fun, with good tight footwork, and excellent musicality.  The judges gave them straight 9’s to 27.  Totaling 52 on the night.

Marie and Jonathan opened with the Quickstep. Basically good musicality, all though there was a slow spot or two. Good foot work, very entertaining.  The judges liked it too, they gave them 10 – 9 – 9  for 28.

The Cha Cha in the Latin round was cute, quirky, had nice musicality, but not enough Cha Cha.  The judges gave them straight 8s for 24. A total of 52 on the night.

Mel B and Maksim danced a Foxtrot in the Ballroom Round. Boring dance.  The judges gave them straight 8s for 24 points.

In the Latin round the totally made up for the boredom with a smoldering, sexy – hot Paso Dobles. Ei-chie Mama. Great character, great choreography, awesome musicality, and a to die for dress.  The judges were blown away and gave them straight 10s for 30 points. A total of 54 on the night.

Jane and Tony drew the Quickstep in the Ballroom round. Now I have to say I Walk The Line does not seem like a ballroom dance selection. I thought it had some nice footwork, but it should have been a two step.  The judges gave them straight 8s for 24.

Their Cha Cha in the Latin round was very nice. Jane Seymour at 56 has a to kill for body. Very nice Cha Cha. The judges scored them 8 – 9 – 9 for 26.  A total of 50 on the evening.

Jenny and Derek danced a Viennese Waltz in the opening round. Very fluid, graceful. The judges scored them 8 – 8 – 9 for 25.

In the Latin round Jenny and Derek Rumba’d. Very nice and dreamy dance. Smooth and romantic. Excellent choreography.  The judges scored them  9 – 9 – 10 for 28. A total of 53 on the evening.

Cameron and Edyta had the Quickstep in the Ballroom round. Fast but there were some serious missteps. I did not like the ending. Edyta has a habit of making a splashy landing, and tonight was no exception. The judges gave them straight 8s for 24 points.

In the Latin round every thing was different. The pair drew the Jive, and jive they did. Great musicality, nice foot work, great kicks, and nice kicks.  The judges socred them straight 9’s for 27 points. A total of 51 one the night.

I expect to see Mel B and Maksim’s  Paso Dobles for the encore performance tomorrow night, it totally rocked.

In the bottom two?  Good question. I’m going to say Marie and Jonathan, Jane and Tony. But it is really hard to tell. Who’s going home? I’ve no clue and last week’s results verified that.

The cheetah tats in support of Sabrina were cute and a nice show of solidarity among the dancers and celebs.

Till tomorrow night,

Sith,

Tanglefoot
