Dancing With The Stars – Season Eight – Week #2

Posted by ctanglefoot on March 17, 2009

Should we watch the leader board or the injury board? Time will tell, the leader board maybe what to watch, but the injury board is gaining momentum.

Tonight marked the second night of the season’s competition. The scores from tonight’s dances will be combined with last week’s judging scores and the view votes from both nights. The two lowest vote getting couples will dance fight to remain on the show through a dance off.

So how did their fare against the Salsa and the Quickstep? Here’s my thoughts…

Holly Madison and Dimity Chapin danced a Quickstep – He looked like he was dragging her across the dance floor. Blah footwork, although the judges liked the footwork, they received straight sixes for 18 points on the night, combined with last week’s 18 points for a total of 36.

David Alan Grier (or Davy G) and Kym Johnson danced a Salsa. Good foot work, nice body attitude.  I think he did better than the judges scored them 6 – 5 – 6 for 17 on the night combined with last week’s 19 points for a total of 36.

Denise Richards and Maksim Chmerkovskiy drew the Quickstep for the night.  Kind of stiff legged, but nice footwork.  Much better performance than last week.  The judges scored them straight 7s (at this point David Alan Grier was robbed) for 21 points on the night, combined with last week’s 18 for a total of 39 points.

Belinda Carlisle and Jonathan Roberts danced a Salsa. She got lost in the dance, as in where she was in the dance, it lacked musicality.  The judges scored them straight 6s  for 18 on the night combined with last week’s 17 points for a total of 35.

Ty Murray and Chelsea Hightower danced a Quickstep. Murray deserves the most improved for the week acknowledgement, a complete 180 in his comfort zone and ability.  I totally enjoyed the dance it had great energy, good body attitude, good footwork. His shoulders should come up just a little bit.  The judges scored them 7 – 6 – 7 for 20 on the night combined with last week’s 14 points for a total of 34.

Shawn Johnson and Mark Ballas danced a Salsa.  Personally not enough hip action for me.  Good foot work, nice finished movement. The judges scored them straight 8s for 24 on the night combined with last week’s 23 points for a total of 47.

Steve Wosniack and Karina Smrynoff Quicksteped. I have to say he can’t dance but I adore Steve Wosniack (and I’m a PC person) he has great attitude and joy. He can’t dance but he’s having a great time. Wosniack is dancing through the pain of a disintegrating bone in his foot (injury two on the night.) The judges scored them 6 – 5 – 6 for 17 on the night combined with last week’s 13 points for a total of 30.

Chuck Wicks and JulieAnn Hough Salsa’d. Not bad, but I ended up watching her more than him. I have no idea what he did, the judges said it was all her. The judges scored them 6 – 7 – 7 for 20 on the night combined with last week’s 20 points for a total of 40.

Lawrence Taylor  and Edtya Sliwinska Quickstepped.  My husband bemoans he missed it. The judges liked it, I thought it was blah. The judges scored them 7 – 6 – 7 for 20 on the night combined with last week’s 16 points for a total of 36.

Steve O  could not be with us tonight, but his partner Lacey Schwimmer faced the heat of the judges alone.  The couple we to have danced a Salsa but in dress rehearsal Steve O did a forward flip onto his back… on top of his mic pak. The dance was to quote Bruno Tomioli, “A series of unfortunate event….where was the Salsa.” Based on the dress rehearsal performance the judges scored them 5 – 4 – 5 for 14 on the night combined with last week’s 17 points for a total of 31.

Lil’ Kim and Derek Hough danced a Quickstep – a quickstep with no physical contact. She needs to watch her mouth movements. Nice footwork, she was a bit off balance at one point towards the end. But not bad.  Marking them down on their lack of body contact in a close dance the judges scored them 6 – 7 – 7 for 20 on the night combined with last week’s 20 points for a total of 40.

Melissa Rykroff and Tony Dovolani Salsa’d – great energy, great hips, great feet work, great joy, and it had definite musicality.  The judges scored them 9 – 8 – 9 for 26 on the night combined with last week’s 23 points for a total of 49.

Gilles (pronounced Jeee-illes) and Cheryl Burke danced a Quickstep.  Gilles separated his shoulder last Monday morning (injury three on the night.) Terrible music selection for the first half of the dance, great for the second.  Good footwork, good frame, good attitude. The judges scored them the first straight 9s of the season for 27 on the night combined with last week’s 24 points for a total of 51, to lead the leader board.

With two crutches up Jewel was the first out, but Nancy O’Dell leads the injury board – her torn meniscus required surgery last Thursday.  Adding to tonight’s injury board we have….

Jewel – two fractured tibia – out

Nancy O’Dell – torn meniscus  – out

Steve O – injured back – hospitalized

Steve Wosniack – broken bone in his foot

Gilles Marini – separated shoulder.

Until tomorrow night,

Sith,

Tanglefoot

    Good overview.

In terms of Chuck and JulieAnne – how did they get such high scores (comparably) after the judges didn’t have a good thing to say? Potential bias here?

Ty was a pleasant surprise and improvement. Melissa & Gilles shined! Lil’ Kim could last!

Am I’m thinking chemistry had a lot to do with their high marks. He’s adorable, she’s adorable, they sparkle. But I agree others deserved the marks they recieved. Your assessments fit in with mine.
